In recent years, makeup has been rapidly expanding. From large corporations to small businesses, it is known that millions of people enjoy using makeup– men and women alike. But do we really know what is going inside our makeup? It is known that skincare prep. is needed prior to the application of makeup, but why? This is because skincare is used as a barrier to protect our skin from the chemicals composed in makeup. Although, primer does act as a barrier from our skin to makeup.
When we look at the back of the products toward the ingredients section, we don’t really know what many of them are. For many of those knowledgeable in makeup ingredients, you may know that the products that end in “-cone” are silicone-based, primarily dimethicone. This is a popular ingredient in makeup because of dimethicone it smooths surfaces and a rather plush texture. Chemicals or compounds like these are in thousands of products ranging from cosmetics to a variety of lubricants because of its uses.
These silicone based chemicals are used in makeup to provide mattifying effects on the skin, providing oil-regulation. Many of those who have oily, sensitive or possibly acne prone skin target products that are silicone based. This is because other products like water based, causes the oil production to become worse over time because of how oil and water do not mix. This does lead to comedogenic products as many water based and silicone based products are comedogenic.
Products that are comedogenic have the power to cause negative skincare effects. This is because it has compounds that can clog pores and cause acne flare ups because it is composed of chemicals that harm sensitive skin. Products like these can have long-lasting effects, causing it difficult to get rid of the acne. In comparison to non-comedogenic products, it doesn’t harm the skin and therefore does not clog pores. Yes, it still has certain chemicals that can cause harm but less likely to those who are acne prone or have sensitive skin.
Knowing the chemicals that are in your makeup is the first step to improving your overall skin condition as well as better makeup application. Pairing the wrong products together can make your skin worse or possibly cause the application of makeup to appear patchy or cause it to pill (peel).
