In this new age of technology, there is no doubt that this kind of tool will be served in the media. Whether it would be social media or film, it is being heavily used. With this abundance of horror movies being released this year, it is important to touch on why we like horror movies so much.
There is a large demographic of people who enjoy watching horror movies or the idea of the horror genre itself. It is known that horror movies contain surreal and paranormal aspects involved, so we know that they are fake. But why are people afraid? We know that it is only actors playing those parts, and have seen them as normal people, so why be afraid? This is because of our evolutionary response system to how we react to suspense and terror. Under these conditions, a rush of adrenaline is pumping through our bodies, keeping us alert for any unknown surprises. We do not experience these sensations commonly so this surge almost acts as excitement, wanting more. It keeps us entertained, almost, making sure we are paying attention to every detail, hanging onto the edge of our seats.
Besides the rush of adrenaline, there is no doubt there are people who have a morbid curiosity about all things creepy. It is almost like, “the call of the void” if you will. Many divers who explore the ocean may find the lack of awareness unnerving, but many have responded that they get the urge to venture further into the deep, wanting to find mysteries. Many who enjoy horror experience that as well, venturing into the dark side of humanity. Our brain is afraid of the unknown, yet it is an organ that is constantly learning and growing. Because of this, it makes certain people enjoy horror movies more than others.
Although there isn’t much research to go off of, many people have stated they are just naturally captivated by morbid topics. There is nothing wrong with being interested in conventionally dark things, but there is also a limit to what you can indulge in.
